At Future Health we process and store your sample using the volume reduction method. This is the same method used by the majority of cord blood banks. However, a small number of cord blood banks choose not to process the sample in this way and store it as whole blood.
It is important to consider the following points when choosing between the volume reduced method and whole blood storage:
The NHS public cord blood bank uses the volume-reduced method ONLY and DO NOT STORE whole blood. This is the same for the Anthony Nolan Trust and for the vast majority of public banks around the world. Making volume reduction the industry standard in the UK.
Storing whole blood is the cheap way of processing and storing cord blood stem cells. It does not require any processing as you store all components of the blood in one sample including the red blood cells & the plasma (which have to then be removed before transplantation) – who covers the processing cost at this stage, you?
Red blood cells lyse during freezing releasing enzymes and other factors which can damage the stem cells - volume reduction reduces the number of red blood cells in your sample and therefore minimises the damage done by these factors during freezing.
Furthermore, because we volume reduce we add a minimal amount of Cryoprotectant (DMSO), if we didn’t reduce the volume we would need to add more DMSO – if used in a transplant this can be toxic and potentially damaging to the liver when in high concentration.
